Metal Detecting Permission Form

Published by Larry on Tagged Metal Detecting Tips, Metal Detector Training

I recommend getting written permission every time you hunt on private property. There may be landowners who have concern about you being injured on their property and will more likely permit hunting if you provide a liability waiver as a part of the process. I learned a good lesson in my early days of metal detecting about getting hunting permission. As a high school teacher and metal detecting club sponsor, I chose to take four club members on a hunt to a FL ghost town that we researched. The latest iformation said the land was open to metal detecting. After about 30 minutes of hunting shot guns were fired over our heads and voices screamed, “get off our property and don’t come back”. Needless to say we exited quickly. I am not sure to this day, 35 years later, that they were the owners but those guns spoke loudly. Always get permission! Here is a form that I use now and you can copy.   Here’s to “diggin it”  Larry

Permission to Metal Detect on Private Property

I, _____________________________________ agree to allow (type your name and address), to use a metal detector to search for and recover buried coins, relics and other artififacts located on my property at ________________________________. In addition, I offer my service to you. If you or a family member have lost a valuable piece of jewelry or other significant metal object, I am happy to search and find it at no charge or cost to you. It is understood that recovery includes the digging of small holes which will be repaired as nearly as possible to original condition. This permission will remain in effect until such time that it is revoked in writing.

                                                 Liability Waiver Form

In consideration of permission to use a metal detector to search for and recover metal artifacts on the property located at ___________________________________ and owned by ____________________________ , I, (type your name), agree to release from all liability for personal injury or property damage that I may suffer as the result of my searching said property. This release is binding and discharges said owner, his or her heirs, executors, administrators, from all actions, causes  of action, claims and demands for, upon, or by reason of any damage, loss, injury which I may sustain while engaged in metal detecting on the owner’s property.

I think this is a great form for getting permission to hunt on someone’s land. My question is do you just walk up to someone’s door and ask if you can detect on their property? I’m pretty new at this and that just seems awkward.

  2. Larry Says:

Shane I have done just that but I also use a letter if I have difficulty reaching someone. Having lived in this community and both a retired high school teacher/counselor (31 years) and minister to children (35 years), I am fairly well known too. Just using the form I have a 75-80% success rate. Offering to find something that they may have lost also helps to get permission.

Have you written an entry on research techniques? If not I think that would be a good topic.

  4. Larry Says:

    Shane,
In several of the posts and in the free small ebook I talk about and give several research techniques. I also have a section in my soon to be released ebook on techniques. However, you are on target and I will put a post in next week on research methods/techniques. This is a must area for the hobby.
