Scyphate – Cup Coin

A very popular, easy to find coin is the “cup coin”. Many detector users in the middle east and in Asia-Minor have found these most unusual coins. I have several and will be giving one away in the April 15th free coin drawing (see picture above). Collectors who are interested in collecting ancient coins will enjoy this coin. Most of these coins date from 250-550 A.D. and are commonly referred to as Christ Cupped coins. Each coin will have the image of Christ on one side and are cup or bowl shaped ranging in size from an American nickel to half dollar size. Many hoards of these coins were buried by Roman soldiers before going off to fight. However, many of them never returned and thus their money remained in the ground for many centuries only to be discovered by archeologists or a metal detector hobbyist. To qualify for any month’s coin giveaway, leave a comment on any post on this blog. The drawings always take place on the 15th of the month. Here’s to “diggin it”!  Larry

Today, I went to the local schoolyard that was considered “metal detected” out by many…But it wasn’t! I found six coins and two rings within the first hour….Sometimes our own backyard is indeed better to start out with…

Great start. This is the home town advantage. 85% of my 150,000 coins have come out of my “backyard”.
