Garrett Metal Detectors - The Ace 250

Published by Larry on Tagged Detector Review

If you read many of my articles, you will know that I do not advocate spending mega bucks to get into this wonderful hobby of treasure finding with metal detectors. As a hobbyist with almost 40 years of using metal detectors, I am convinced that the most expensive equipment is not the best way to start. What delights me today is the fact that the big name metal detector manufacturers are producing some great machines at price levels that permit people at every age and income level to find out that this is the best hobby in the world. The Garrett Ace 250 is one of the very best of these new detectors. Priced at just over $200,  this is a powerful detector with numerous features.

The instrument takes no time to get ready for some serious fun. In less than three minutes I was ready to try it out. Exceptional balance and very light weight, will permit all day hunting. Although I have not done a complete field test, my ventures in using it convinced me that this is a winner. I dug up a man’s gold ring at more than 9 inches deep. My test gardens provide a great challenge for any detector and this unit did very well in my trash garden as well as  my 30 year old coin garden. It performed nearly as well as the Fisher F2 (my personal favorite start-up unit) and out performed it on gold targets. Just my short testing of the Ace 250 has caused me to further move away from the big boys. For almost all of my coin shooting on land, I will grab my two light weight machines from Garrett and Fisher and leave the big boys at home. Who needs them? Here’s to “diggin it”!  Larry

Own an ace 250 as backup to my Explorer. I always take out the ace to do a quick tot lot. It is a great machine.

I agree. I have both the 150 and 250 and all three coils. I have been taking the Fisher F2 as my backup and now grab one of the Garrett’s also. Your comment puts you into next week’s free coin drawing.

Uncle Larry, I have some questions regarding which detector would best fit my needs. The soil in the area in which I live is mostly hard clay with major iron deposits. However, just down the road, it becomes almost totally sandy (including black sand). I need a detector that will reach through the hard packed clay but is still good for sandy terrain and has plenty of discrimination for the aluminum and tin trash and the iron deposits. What wuold you suggest?

    Joe,
The Tesoro line and Minelab detectors are excellent for your soil conditions in NC. White’s and Garrett mid-line and up detectors also will do well there. My favorite of all detectors for tough terrain is the Minelab Sovereign for land and black sand beaches the Excaliber 2. Both have the same great technolgy for getting through mineralized ground and the ability to discriminate well and not lose the small gold. In fact, your gold response on these instruments is very superior.
