Brian Jeffery is the winner of the Ace 150. He is 17, a newbie to the hobby, and lives in Virginia (one of the better states for relic hunting). Brian emails me frequently and asks for articles relating to Civil War relic hunting. Congratulations Brian

    Hi Larry,

Sounds like you got started in “diggin” about the same time as I did. I started in 1977 or 1978 and have enjoyed it since. Going to AZ soon to try and find some gold. Have you done any of this at all. If so, what do I need to pay attention to? Any tips would be appreciated.

    Keep up the site…

    Ron

    Ron,
I started on Christmas Day 1969 as a result of my wife purchasing me a BFO unit maufactured by a FL high school science teacher. Best Christmas gift I ever received, as it changed my focus & free time dramatically. I have done some gold hunting with moderate success. The three keys for me was: (1) having the right equipment including a good pick for removing rocks, (2) research carefully to assure that you are not violating any state laws, or working on someone’s claim (3) keep your body hydrated and protected from elemnts (all forms of plant and animal wildlife). In my early adventures, I was shot at, injured and physically exhausted from my ignorance. I have found a few ounces of placer gold and a few small nuggets. Love the adventure almost as much as finding the gold. Minelab and White’s are my favorite gold detectors and I prefer small coils (4-6 inches) for working rocky environments and stream wading. Happy gold hunting.
