April’s Coin Giveaway

Published by Larry on Tagged 1900's Coins, Give-A-Ways, Promotional

This month’s dug coin giveaway will take place on the 29th. Any comment during April on one of the blog’s 85 posts qualifies you for the drawing of the1901 O Barber Half in Fair condition. I found this half at about 5 inches deep in 1995 on a vacant lot that now has our city library. It is one of more than 100 Barber Halves I have dug-up in Tarpon Springs, FL.

My oldest coin find to date, today(in the mail). Tks a bunch Larry. It was a nice thing to end my ruff mourning and coming home empty handed.

I took some of your advice and searched the net for my towns history. I found that in 1838 900 Potawatomi Indians from northern Indiana where rounded up at gun point by soldiers and marched on a 61 day journey to Kansas. It was called the ” Trail of Death ” by historians. It started Aug 30th at Plymouth Ind. and on Sept 6th they set up camp on the south edge of Logansport along Horney Creek where it meets the Eel river. They camped there 3 days.

So I was all hyped up this mourning, I was going to a place I thought sure I would finally find an old coin. Never been there before, its all woods with trails. I figured to hunt along the creeks edge. Well, with the spring growth and fallen branches all over, it was tuff going. Definitely not a place for a large coil, have to save up and get a sniper. Anyway after about 3 hrs I heard thunder and it started to sprinkle. By the time I got to the van I was wet and without a single coin, bummer.

Thought sure I would find something. I kept getting good signals, but found nothing but rusty trash. I read somewhere that the ground can mess up signals. Most of the spots I dug in had rocks 2-5″ under the dirt. And half the time I found clay 4-6″ down….Maybe that was throwing false signals to my detector. Also most of the area I search was low/gully type. I am thinking that most of the campsites would have been on higher ground. Next time I go I will look for the higher ground. Also there is allot of trash from yrs of people going in the woods and leaving their trash.

Anyway, when my wife I got home I told her all about my day. And I said look what I got today, she said wow, you finally found something good…..Hehehehe…I laughed and said no, it came in the mail I didn’t find it….Last week I took off my ring and told her, look what I found…She got excited for about 3 seconds. Then she realized it was my wedding ring…If an when I do find something she wouldn’t believe me…

    Well, tks again Larry
